Just breathe....

Juan Jose "John" Cayado Jr.  1984-2005

Thursday morning, September 22nd, started like any other work day.  Get up, feed Chloe and the boys, take a shower, get dressed, head to work.   Once at work, say hi to some friends, start up my pc, make some oatmeal for breakfast, and get the workday rolling.   I checked some emails, and then came across two that blew me away.

The first one, in the subject line read "FYI, read first".  The second one read "Funeral information".  These two emails were from a very close friend of mine, Leslie, back home in Miami.  How I know Leslie, she was my meantor, my bestfriend growing up, and a second mom.   We first met at the horse ranch I used to ride at back in '88.  She was married with two kids.  Her daughter Krissy was 8 years old, and her son John John was 4.   Unfortunately, now, she only has one child, because her son John died on September 21st.

The accident happened about 20 days before his death.  He was riding his motorcycle down US-1 in South Miami heading to work at the Falls.  As he was driving down US-1, a young black woman in a large old Cadillac pulled out in front of him.  Witnesses say he was obeying the speed limit, just cruising along.  The driver told police that she thought she had time to get across before he got to her...

He was airlifted to the Jackson trauma center, where he spent the next 20 days fighting to stay alive.  His injuries were all internal.  His lungs collapsed, a couple of days into it he had a heart attack, eventually his intestines shut down, then his pancreas, then his kidneys.  Leslie said the last couple of days were terrible for him and he suffered immensely.   When he passed on, Leslie was there with him, holding his hand.  He just barely opened one of his eyes, squeezed her hand, and went to sleep.

The funeral was held in Miami.  They had two viewings, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.  He was to be buried Monday morning.  I flew down Friday night so I could attend the viewing and personally send my condolences since they are like my second family.  I arrived at the funeral home Sunday afternoon.   As much as I wanted to see Leslie, and Krissy, and their family, I was also dreading it.

Leslie was always a strong woman who showed little emotion when it came to affection or sadness.   She told me that being of Norwegian decent, that's typical of that background.  They are typically cold people.  That's not to say they are heartless or mean, they just don't show emotion.   There was no way she was heartless.  She helped me get through so much in my teen years, and taught me so many things as well.  She's an extremely intelligent woman, who loves to read and learn about just anything, knows so much about everything from finances to horses to medicine.  You name it, she knew it.  She's an incredible woman.   And this day, would be the first day I ever saw her cry.

As I walked up to the funeral home from the parking lot, I saw John's dad, Juan, standing outside with some of his family members and friends.  I stopped to say hello and tell him that I'm sorry for his loss.  His eyes were full of tears, but managed to smile when he saw me.   He introduced me to his family and told them how I was like a second daughter to them.  I was trying my best to keep it together, and just breathe..  Seeing the pain in his eyes tore me up inside.

Their daughter Krissy was also standing outside talking with some of John's friends.   We hugged, said our hello's and she brought me inside to see her mom.  When Leslie saw me, she was so surprised!  She started off with a big smile, but as soon as we hugged, she began to cry.  While she was hugging me and crying, she said that I was the first person she saw that entire weekend to make her cry because I was always like her second daughter to her.   On one hand, I felt horrible that she cried, but on the other, I knew this was a good step forward in her healing process.

The rest of the afternoon she introduced me as her 'adopted daughter'.  She told her family and friends how I used to babysit Krissy and John John when they were little.  And how I lived with them the summer of Hurricane Andrew.  They had a house built down in the Redlands on 5 acres.  She had a barn built in the back with horses.  I would live with them Sunday night thru Friday, and then go back home to my parent's house on the weekends.  I would take care of the kids during the week as well as the barn and the horses while her and Juan were at work.   To this day, they still refer to the downstairs bedroom as 'Steffy's bedroom' whenever they have company.

Krissy and I sat down in the room where the open casket was at.  There were several couches along the surrounding walls, with six foot flower arrangements behind them.  They had a video playing that Krissy's boyfriend had made of pictures of John from when he was a baby up until his adult life with music in the background.   This was a great idea since John looked nothing like himself in the casket.   As we sat and watched the video, it was impossible to keep from crying.  All I could think about were the memories I had of little John John when he was a kid, playing at the ranch, chasing the little girls around.  We had caught him a couple of times showing this little girl Elizabeth his weenkie in the ranch bathroom.  They were doing the whole "If you show me yours, I'll show you mine" deal.  They were 5 years old.

Even when he was a baby, Leslie said he loved the women.  She told us about the time they were eating at this restaurant, and John was still in a highchair at the time.  One of the waitresses had walked to the table next to them and was bending over cleaning up the table when little John John reached over and pinched her butt.  The waitress, thinking it was a man that did it, swung around and was about to slap what she thought was a grown man, but instead, was this cute little kid laughing hysterically because he knew what he had done.  That was John John.

I saw him 2 years ago for the first time in about 10 years I think it was.  I was talking to Leslie and Krissy out on their back deck, and John came walking out.  I stood up and literally had to look straight up to see his face.  He had grown up to be 6'8" tall!!  I think I said, "Holy shit you're tall!"  And he was still as cute as ever!   Little John John grew up to be this tall gentle giant.  And then I thought, "Man, if I were only 10 years younger.."   We chatted for a while, and one of the memories he had of me was when I took him and Krissy shopping at Cutler Ridge Mall.  We all bought matching Teva sandals and I bought a Saigon Kick tape.  That was also one of Krissy's memories of us all being together.

As I sat in the funeral home, I overheard stories of John as an adult, and what a good man he had grown up to be.  He was known as 'Big John' or 'Big Foot'.  He wanted to eventually get married and have 6 or more kids.  He wanted to become a police officer.   He currently was the Assistant Director of Security at the Falls.  His boss was about to promote him Director of Security.   I watched friends, family, co-workers, come and go out of the funeral home.  To see such a great person die so young is just heartwrenching, who had such a great future ahead of him.   I am thankful that he's no longer suffering though, and he's in God's hands now.

Rest in Peace John John.  I'll never forget you.

Summer goal.... DONE!!!

One of my goals this summer was to be able to hang with the lead group on the Tuesday night ride up over 985.   Tonight, September 6, 2005, I finally did it!!!   Right before 985, there's a fairly steep hill with a false flat after it and then some more climbing.  This is where I usually get dropped.  I can get up the steep hill just fine, but then I fall apart up the next gradual climb.  But tonight, I made it all the way to 985.  It was frickin' AWESOME!!

Since I've never been able to keep up with the lead pack through this section, I had no idea how fast they went up to 985.  HOLY COW!!!  It was insane!  I got in my drops and just pushed through.  As we were getting over 985, again, another slight but very painful climb up to 985, I started to lose some gas, so Javi gave me a little push to keep me with the group.  What a great guy!  :-)

After 985, it gets extremely fast on the flats.  I hung with the guys until we got to Hamilton Mill, Markie Mark gave me a little push to help me close in the gap, but once we got through the light, I got dropped.  I had nothing left in the legs, and spent my wad early.  BUT, I made it over 985 with them, and to me, that's all that counts!  :-)

I still managed to pull out an average of 20mph which is the fastest ride for me all summer.  Actually, I think that's the fastest ride I've ever done.  After a crappy 40 mile ride yesterday with Bruce and Rick, I was definitely happy with tonight's performance.  ;-)

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!  Yeah baby!!!  Sorry, still got cyclist high... lol.

Georgia State Games Criterium Championships

Race Report:

Yesterday, I raced in the GA State Games Crit Championships at John's Creek.  My race was at 8am, so this meant a very early morning wake up call.  Steph was meeting me at Mickey D's for a little pre-race breakfast.  We both had the McGriddle meal.  Mmmm mmm.   I know that doesn't sound very healthy, but the protein/carbs/sugar that the breakfast provides gives me enough energy for the ride.

After I registered for the race, Steph and I rode the course a couple of times to warm up.  It was SO nice having Steph ride with me again.  I've really missed her bitching, I mean company this season since she's had Raury.  ;-)

The Women's Cat 4 Race finally started a little after 8:00am.  There were a total of 8 of us in the race.  Unfortunately, I had no teammates with me in this race, so I tried to strategize to the best of my ability.  After the first couple of laps, I decided to set in about 3 or 4th in the pack.  The 2 Cycleworks girls never came up to the front to work, so I decided since I was by myself, I wouldn't do any work either.

This particular Crit was 40 minutes plus 3 laps.  There was a Preem but I was so confused, I couldn't tell if the Preem lap had already happened or not.  There were a few attacks by other riders but none that actually stuck.  On the preem lap, I got through second.  For the rest of the 40 minutes and 2 of the 3 laps, we all stayed together.  On the last lap, I decided to attack on the uphill.  I was pretty surprised when I looked back and didn't see anyone with me.  I thought for sure the Cycleworks girls would have been right on my wheel.

As the road leveled out, I looked back a couple of times, and saw the field busting it to catch up.  Unfortunately, I sat up thinking there was no way I could actually make this attack stick, and they eventually caught up to me.  I figured I may still have a chance since they had to work so hard to catch me, that I could sit up, rest a little, and have a little something extra for the finish.  Yeah, I was wrong.  I should have kept pushing myself and never sat up, and never looked back.  I thnk had I done this, I might have been able to win it.  Oh well.  There's always next time!!

Going around Corner #1- one of the riders crashed on this corner on the last lap.  I hope she's okay.

Memorial Day Weekend

This past weekend, I headed up to the mountains with Steph, Max, and Chloe.  We stayed at Steph's parents house up in Franklin, N.C.  This was Chloe's first time up in the mountains, so I was anxious to see how she was going to do.  She ended up doing awesome!  She even listened to me when she was off her leash, roaming around the yard.  That's big for Chloe..  I have to admit, I was also looking forward to getting some much needed R&R myself.

Besides eating a ton of food, and boy did I eat a ton of food, and taking some much needed naps, I had a lot of fun this weekend.  We went into Town Saturday afternoon and did some shopping and laughed at the people dressed in their "Little House on the Prarie" (as Steph called it) clothes.   Later that night, we ate dinner at Linda and Dan's house, and played with their 5 labs!   On Sunday, Steph, her mom, and I took Max and Chloe to the Nantahala to watch the kayakers and rafters coming in from their trips.  It was fun watching them come in and even got to see a couple of beginners bite it out in the water.  Here was a guy that knew what he was doing...

It was pretty funny though, as we're standing there, of course everyone and their mother wants to pet Max, and want to know what kind of dog he is..  well, because he's gorgeous and he's HUGE!   Steph's mom felt bad for Chloe because no one was really paying any attention to her.  I had to explain to her that Chloe is used to it by now, because any and every time we walk with Max and his mama on the greenway, he gets all of the attention.  How does she not get any attention with a face like this??  LOL.

Sunday night, we went down into the valley for a neighborhood bbq.  All of the food was great, especially Steph's grandma's sweet potato casserole and her dad's homemade Spaetzle.  Yummmm-eeee!  It's amazing I'm not 10 pounds heavier with as much food as I ate this weekend.  The rest of the weekend, we just kind of hung out, took naps, and relaxed.  We did run into one scary beast though while sitting by the pond..  They call him....

MAXZIRRRRRRA!!!

So I can cook after all...

Yesterday morning, while out grocery shopping and running errands, I thought it would be nice to have my folks over for dinner since they're always feeding me.  I thought I would try a Cuban dish called Vaca Frita (fried cow).  I had this dish for the first time a couple of weekends ago down in Miami at my niece's First Communion Luncheon.  It's a spin off of my favorite Cuban dish, Ropa Vieja (Old Clothes).  Sounds gross in english huh?  But it's actually very good.

After a couple of phone calls to my Cuban Sis-in-Law, for the recipe and cooking instructions, I set off on my cooking journey.  And yes, for me, this is quite a journey...  ;-)   I thought about inviting my friends over for dinner as well, but was scared it wouldn't come out right, and I didn't want preggers getting sick...   Okay, I'm not that bad of a cook, I'm just paranoid.

I went home, followed the instructions and made some kick ass (if I might say so myself..) Vaca Frita!  My parents loved it!  Usually, when I cook something, I get full before dinner is even served.  And it's not that I taste alot beforehand, I think just the smells in the kitchen fill me up.  But this turned out too good to not eat.  I must have woken up in a Betty Crocker mood, because I also baked some homemade M&M cookies as well for dessert.   That could also be due to PMS... ha!

Anyhoo, unlike Heimy, I didn't take any pics of my Vaca Frita, although there is still some leftover in the fridge that I could take.  Nah.. I think I'll keep my meat to myself this time around.  ;-)

Here's the recipe if you're interested:

A nice slab of beef brisket
2 onions
1 pepper
8 garlic cloves
8 lemons
salt
cooking oil

Directions: Boil the meat in water along with one cut up onion, one cut up pepper, and 4 chopped up garlic cloves.  Add quite a bit of salt to the water.   Boil until meat is tender and can shred easily.

Remove meat from water and marinate in 8 squeezed lemons, 1 cut up onion, and 4 chopped up garlic cloves.  Let sit in fridge marinating for a couple of hours.

When ready to cook, shred the brisket by pulling pieces apart.  In a fry pan, add a couple of tbsp's of oil and fry up the meat and marinade.   When meat begins to brown on the edges, it's ready to be served.

Enjoy!!

OMG... I'm 31....???

I know, I know...  I haven't blogged in over a month... been extremely busy with Volleyball and work and traveling but, I've got a couple of minutes to catch up, so here it goes.

This week, Frances put together a little night out for my 31st birthday.  Holy crap, I'm 31!  The game plan was to have dinner at Everybody's Pizza, then hit the Improv, and finally, head over to the Clermont Lounge to see Blondie and her can crushing boobies.  The night started off at Susan's where we had a little pre-party shot of Mandarin Vodka.   We met with Frances and headed to dinner.   I consumed way too much alcohol last night.   Before dinner, I had my usual Long Beach Tea.  Man I love those.. During dinner, John decided to order me another one, this time, making it a double.  Ummm... hellooooo... does he have any idea how much alcohol is already in those drinks???  When it got to the table, I tried it and about choked.  So John tries it, and decides that, yes, it is a little too strong.  We added some more juice to it, and it was just right.  lol.

After dinner, we thought Baby A was on the way.  Steph got light headed and had to lay down.  One of the bartender's is going through Mid-wife classes, so she comes running out to check Steph out.  All was okay, thank God.   Jeff and Steph ended up heading home since she still wasn't feeling good.  They missed a heck of a night out!

Next stop, was the Dark Horse Tavern and Grill.  We met up with Duane and Kyle and some of their friends there.  Duane bought me the best tasting shot ever.  I can't remember the name of it though.  Alligator something.  It was yummy, and I'm not a shot person by any means.  Frances' friends Chris and Cat met up with us too.  They're really cool.  If I remember correctly, there was some arm wrestling going on I think..

Final stop, the Clermont Lounge to see the Atlanta Icon Blondie.  She's a large black woman, with blonde hair, who crushes cans between her boobs.  Yeah, rock on!  After standing in line for what felt like an eternity, and after a drunk dial to Amy I, we finally got in.  Woohoo!  Walking into the place, I thought it was going to be much larger, but it was quite a tiny little place.  And of course, the first thing you see is a large (healthy eater) stripper, already naked dancing on the bar, who I'd rather pay money to to put her clothes back on.  Sitting around the bar are a bunch of butch lesbians, handing her dollars..  YUCK!

We head around to the dance floor area to meet up with Duane and those silly kids, who got in way before us, and Mr. Harris is there!  Woohoo!  After all the hellos, it's time to hit the bar for another Tea.  BTW, I'm feeling extremely good by this point in the night, and it's not just from the alcohol.  ;-)  We get back over to the group and we're all dancin', having a good time and Mr. Harris decides to buy me a shot from the 'shot girl'.  Okay, remember the stripper heffer I mentioned earlier on the bar, I think it was her that gave me the shot.  And if it wasn't, it was another large woman...  Anyhoo, she walks up and she's got those shots in a tube deal.  So, Eric buys me one. I'm thinking, "Cool, a shot."  So, I look over at Eric to say thanks, and as I turn back around, the lady's got her top off and the shot tube stuck in between her gi-normous (think the movie Elf) boobs!  HA!  Now I'm thinking how I'm going to kick Eric's ass!   I'm drunk, so I grab the tube with my mouth and get it away from her as quick as possible and down it.  After doing the shot, Eric shakes his head at me, laughing, and motions that I was supposed to put my face between her boobs and shake my head around (you know exactly what I'm describing..) while I grab the shot.  That jackass!  LOL.

Finally, Blondie comes out on stage, and I'm too damn busy dancing to go and check the show out.  I saw her from far away, so I did get to see her.   I can't remember dancing that much before... oh wait, my company holiday party back in January... when I drank 2 bottles of wine..  I'm such a lush.  ;-)

We finally shut Clermont down.  Man, I had the best time!  I'm so glad I got to see all of my good friends throughout the night.  John, thanks for looking out for me all night.  I had a great time hanging out with you again.  Frances, thanks for putting this night together and driving my drunk ass around.  I had a blast!  Sooo-san, thanks for letting me crash on your couch.  It was way comfy!  Duane, thanks for the gator shot.  Eric, thanks for the booby shot you shithead.  Jeff and Steph, thanks for making it out to dinner.  I'm sorry you weren't feeling good and had to go home.  Kyle, thanks for meeting up with us at Dark Horse.  You weren't feeling good either that night.. are you pregnant?  :-)  I think that's everyone.  Thanks for making my 31st not so painful.

I love you guys!!   ( I think I'm still drunk... )  hee hee hee..

Welcome home Chloe...

That's right, my puppy dog Chloe is back!   I recently had the great fortune of getting my dog Chloe back.  I originally adopted her from the Hall County Humane Society about 5 1/2 years ago.  She was just a wee bitty puppy with Parvo.  My vet at the time, saved her life!  After a year in an apartment, I had decided to move back in with my folks so I could save up money to buy a house.  The downside to moving in with them was, I couldn't keep Chloe.  So, with the help of Maven, we found her a home.

The guy who took her kept her for a few months, then decided he couldn't keep her anymore, so she went back to my ex-boyfriend who had a house.  My ex has had her for the last couple of years, and with his recent marriage and new baby boy, they don't have a whole lot of time for Chloe anymore.  So, he called me up and asked me if I wanted to take her back.  Heck yeah I'll take her!!

Chloe is going to be 6 this year, but she still acts like a puppy.  She's a black lab mix, I think with Pitbull because of the shape of her head.  She remembers all of the tricks I taught her and she's still such a sweetheart.  It's been interesting getting my boys (my 2 kitties) to accept her into their territory.  Toby is really good with her, walks around her and even swats at her tail.  Chloe tries to nip at him, in a playful way, but it still makes me a little nervous.  Wasabi, he still doesn't really want to have anything to do with her.    I'm hoping, a couple more weeks, and they'll all be a happy little family.  :-)

Welcome home baby girl!!

Orange County, California

This week, I'm in Orange, California, conducting another Implementation and training with one of our customer's.  Nothing too exciting has been happening, so I guess I can't call it a folly (thanks for the heads up on that Mave.)  I finished up with the client today and all went excellent.  Funny thing, funny weird not funny ha ha, a couple of the people that worked at this company resembled different actors.  One guy looked like Anthony Hopkins, had the same hair or lack thereof, eyes, facial expression.  My main contact, resembled Chris Katan from Saturday Night Live.  And his counterpart vaguely resembled Tom Arnold in a way.  It was pretty weird to say the least.

Funny ha ha, today during the training portion of the trip, I was joking around with the 'Chris Katan' guy, and apparently, whatever I said really tickled one of the other participants, because he choked on his coffee and it came spewing out of his nose and mouth!!   It went all over his laptop, his shirt, his pants, the chair, and the floor.  Luckily, I had just walked away from him and didn't get hit by the shrapnel (sp?).   So he goes running out of the room to clean himself up.  He was still laughing on the way out.  It was classic!  I did feel bad later on though at lunch when they told me he had like 2 brain surgeries.   Not that that has anything to do with him spewing, but, it still made me feel bad for laughing as hard as I did.  He was a good sport though and came back and joked about it.  I'm thinking about sending him a Starbuck's gift certificate.  :-)

I'm still in Cali.  I moved over to Long Beach so I can spend the day at our Corporate office tomorrow, then lucky me gets to fly the redeye home.  Hopefully, I'll have something more entertaining to tell you so that it might actually make 'folly' status.
